
A safety switch that trips once is doing its job. A safety switch that trips every few days is telling you something is wrong — and the answer is almost never “it’s just a faulty switch”.
Before you call anyone, there’s a simple process that will either fix it or tell the electrician exactly where to look. It takes about fifteen minutes and costs nothing.
First, know what actually tripped
Open your switchboard and look at which device moved. There are three different things people call “the power tripping”, and they mean different problems.
- Safety switch (RCD). Usually a wider device with a test button. It monitors for current leaking to earth — the fault that electrocutes people. It trips on leakage, not overload.
- Circuit breaker. A single narrow switch protecting one circuit. It trips when that circuit draws more current than it’s rated for, or on a short circuit.
- Combined RCBO. Modern boards often use devices that do both jobs in one. Which fault occurred isn’t obvious from looking.
If it’s the safety switch, you have a leakage fault — usually moisture, damaged insulation or a failing appliance element. If it’s a breaker, you’re drawing too much on that circuit. Those lead to completely different fixes.
The unplug test
This is the single most useful thing you can do, and it’s the first thing we’d do anyway.
- Unplug everything on the affected circuit — not just the obvious things. Chargers, the fridge, the washing machine, anything in the garage, outdoor items.
- Reset the switch. If it holds, the wiring is fine and an appliance is at fault.
- Plug items back in one at a time, leaving a few minutes between each.
- The one that trips it is your culprit. Note it and leave it unplugged.
If the switch won’t reset with everything unplugged, stop there. That points to a fault in the fixed wiring, and it needs a licensed electrician rather than more experimentation.
The usual suspects
In our part of Sydney, a few causes come up repeatedly:
Water where it shouldn’t be. After heavy rain, outdoor outlets, garden lighting, pool equipment and poorly sealed sheds are the classic offenders. If your tripping started after a storm, begin outside.
Old heating elements. Kettles, toasters, dishwashers, clothes dryers and hot water systems all fail the same way — the element develops a small leak to earth as it ages. The appliance often still works, which is why people don’t suspect it.
Too much on one circuit. Common in older homes where a single circuit covers half the house. Add a heater in winter or an air conditioner in summer and it tips over the edge. This is a breaker tripping, not a safety switch, and the fix is usually another circuit rather than a repair.
A genuinely faulty device. Safety switches are mechanical and they do age. But this is the last thing to suspect, not the first — replacing one to stop “nuisance tripping” without finding the fault removes your protection while leaving the problem in place.
What not to do
Don’t hold the switch up, tape it, or wedge it. People do, and it’s the electrical equivalent of putting tape over a warning light. Don’t keep resetting it repeatedly either — if it trips straight back, something is actively faulty.
And don’t ignore a switch that trips only occasionally. Intermittent leakage faults tend to get worse, usually at the least convenient time.
When it’s worth calling someone
Call an electrician if the switch won’t reset with everything unplugged, if it trips the moment you reset it, if there’s any smell of burning or heat around the board, or if you’ve identified the appliance but it’s a fixed one like an oven or hot water system.
Also worth a call: if your board still has ceramic or rewireable fuses rather than safety switches at all. Safety switches have been required on new circuits for a long time, but plenty of older Western Sydney homes still have partial protection — power points covered but lighting circuits not, for instance. It’s worth knowing which of your circuits are actually protected.

We isolate circuits at the board, test insulation resistance to find where current is escaping, and narrow it down to a section of wiring or a specific appliance. Sometimes it’s ten minutes. Sometimes a fault that only appears when it rains takes longer, and we’ll tell you that up front rather than guessing on the clock.
