Switchboard Upgrade Cost in Western Sydney (2026): What Our Customers Paid

Michael working on the old open switchboard at a Cecil Hills home before the upgrade

A straightforward switchboard upgrade in Western Sydney cost our customers between $1,800 and $4,900 including GST over the last twelve months, and most landed around $2,600. Jobs that also needed new consumer mains, a meter panel rebuild or Level 2 work came to $8,200 to $10,100 all up.

Those figures come from our own paid invoices, not estimates. Below is what sits behind each number, what pushes a job from one band into the other, and why a quote for the “same” switchboard can be thousands of dollars apart.

What a switchboard upgrade cost, by scope

What the job involved What it cost (inc GST) Jobs behind it
Board or internals replaced, no mains or meter work $1,800 to $4,900, most around $2,600 8
Board plus consumer mains, meter panel rebuild or Level 2 work $8,200 to $10,100 all up 3

The first band has eight jobs behind it, so it is a fair guide to what a typical upgrade costs. The second has only three. Read those as recent examples of what bigger jobs have cost, not as a price list.

We have not put a rewiring figure here. We have not done a full rewire in the last twelve months, so any number would be a guess, and we would rather assess it properly than publish one.

The straightforward upgrade: around $2,600

This is the job most people are picturing when they search the price. The old board comes out or gets new internals, every circuit gets its own safety switch, and the mains and the meter are left alone because they are fine.

Our Cecil Hills job is a clean example. It was a single-phase board still running ceramic fuses. We replaced the internals including the main switch, and that was the whole invoice: $2,606. Nothing upstream of the board needed touching.

Where a job lands inside the $1,800 to $4,900 band mostly comes down to what you are adding while the board is open: surge protection, extra circuits, or a bigger board to leave room for an air conditioner, an induction cooktop or an EV charger later.

What takes a job to $8,000 and beyond

When a switchboard quote comes back at eight or ten thousand dollars, it is almost never the same work priced higher. It is a bigger job. Three things do it, and they often turn up together.

The consumer mains

The consumer mains are the cables that run from your meter to your main switch. On our Leumeah job they were 6mm cable feeding the whole house, which was never meant to carry a modern home’s load of air conditioners, an oven and the rest. Those mains were upgraded to 16mm, with new terminations at both ends and testing before the power went back on.

The meter panel and Level 2 work

Sometimes the board can be replaced and the metering left as it is. Sometimes the meter panel has to be rebuilt as well, with the meters and service fuses moved across to a new panel. That metering work is done by an accredited Level 2 service provider, who attends alongside us, and we organise that as part of the job.

Our Leumeah job had both: new consumer mains, a meter panel rebuild with a Level 2 partner, new board internals, an earth stake, surge protection and new smoke alarms. A job in Chipping Norton with board internals, a Level 2 meter panel rebuild and surge protection came to $8,226. Both sit in the bigger band.

The backing board

Older switchboards are often mounted on a backing board that may contain asbestos. If yours is one of them, it changes how the board is handled and what goes in its place, and that adds to the price. Genuine asbestos removal has been rare on our jobs, so we are not publishing a figure for it. If we find it, you hear about it before any extra work starts.

For what a proper replacement backing looks like, our Camden South job shows a new board going in on an insulated backing for fire protection during a renovation.

How long it takes

Our recent switchboard jobs have taken around five hours on site, and the power is off for a good part of that. These are the times from our own jobs:

  • Cecil Hills, single-phase internals replaced including the main switch: 4 hours 56 minutes
  • Leumeah, consumer mains, meter panel rebuild and board: 4 hours 55 minutes
  • Camden South, full board replacement during a renovation: 5 hours 22 minutes

On the bigger jobs we start early so the house has power back before the afternoon. If something at your place cannot lose power, tell us when you book and we will plan around it.

It can also happen fast. Our Bossley Park job went from a website enquiry at 10.21am to a fixed price at 10.54am, and the upgraded board was finished, tested and paid for by mid-afternoon.

Why our prices may be higher than the figures you have seen online

Search for switchboard upgrade costs and you will find guides quoting from around $1,200 to $3,500. Our straightforward band starts at $1,800. That gap is worth explaining.

Most of the figures online are estimates, and many are published by directories and lead sites rather than by the electricians doing the work. They usually describe the board on its own. A real job also includes the testing, the labelling of every circuit, the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work submitted to NSW Fair Trading, and dealing with whatever is behind the panel once the cover is off.

If you have two quotes that are far apart, ask what each one includes:

  • Is the main switch being replaced, or kept?
  • Does every circuit get its own safety switch?
  • Is surge protection included?
  • Has anyone looked at the consumer mains and the meter panel?
  • Will a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work be issued?

Usually the answers explain the difference. As we said on the Leumeah job, it is often that one quote has looked at the mains and the other has not.

Why we do not quote it over the phone

We can share the bands above because they are real. What we cannot tell you without seeing it is which band your house falls into, because the deciding factors are behind the panel: how many circuits there are, the size of the mains, and whether the metering can stay.

So we come out, look properly, and give you a fixed price in writing before anything starts. If there is more than one sensible way to do it, you get the options and you choose. You can send us a photo of your switchboard with the door open first, and we will tell you honestly whether it looks like it needs work.

See what a proper upgrade includes on our switchboard upgrade page, or read the rest of our case studies. If the upgrade is because you are getting an EV charger, the Hoxton Park job shows a board done first and the charger straight after, and our EV charger page covers the rest.

Switchboard upgrade cost questions

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Western Sydney?

Across eight straightforward jobs we invoiced in the last twelve months, $1,800 to $4,900 including GST, with most around $2,600. Jobs that also needed consumer mains, a meter panel rebuild or Level 2 work came to $8,200 to $10,100 all up across three jobs.

Why is my switchboard quote so much higher than the prices online?

Usually because the quote covers more than the board. New consumer mains, a meter panel rebuild and Level 2 work are what take a job from around $2,600 to $8,000 or more. Online figures tend to be estimates for the board alone.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Our recent switchboard jobs took between 4 hours 55 minutes and 5 hours 22 minutes on site, including one with new consumer mains and a meter panel rebuild.

Do you give a fixed price?

Yes. We look at the board, the mains and the metering first, then give you a fixed price in writing before any work starts.
