Installing an EV charger in Western Sydney cost our customers between $2,000 and $2,700 including GST when they had already bought the charger and the switchboard had room for it, and $2,500 to $4,200 when we supplied the charger as well. When the switchboard or the supply needed work first, the whole job came to $6,100 to $9,000.
Those numbers come from our own paid invoices, not estimates. The thing that decides which band you land in is almost never the charger. It is whether your house can carry it.
What an EV charger install cost, by scope
| What the job involved | What it cost (inc GST) | Jobs behind it |
|---|---|---|
| You supply the charger, the board has capacity | $2,000 to $2,700 | 4 |
| We supply and install the charger, the board has capacity | $2,500 to $4,200 | 3 |
| The board or the supply needs work before the charger goes in | $6,100 to $9,000 all up | 3 |
| Pre-install assessment | $275 fixed, credited against the install if it goes ahead |
None of these bands has many jobs behind it, so read them as what recent jobs have cost rather than a price list. We left two jobs out because they would give you the wrong idea. One was a charger going straight onto a point that was already there, a one-off we would not expect to repeat. The other was two chargers inside a full renovation. Neither is a normal home install.
The real question: can your house carry it?
Three of our last five EV charger jobs needed the switchboard upgraded before the charger could go in. On every one of them the switchboard work cost more than the charger installation did.
That is why the price of the charger you pick matters less than people expect. A charger is a new, heavy, long-running load on your house. Before it goes on the wall, someone has to work out whether the board and the supply can take it on top of everything else you already run. These are the things that move the price:
Switchboard capacity and protection
If the board is full, old, or missing safety switches on some circuits, adding a dedicated charger circuit to it is the wrong order of work. The board gets sorted first. That is the step that moves a job from the $2,000 to $4,200 range into the $6,100 to $9,000 one.
What the house already draws
Air conditioners, cooktops, solar and a battery all share the same supply. If maximum demand is already high, the charger has to fit around it. Sometimes that means a supply upgrade. Sometimes a charger with load management, which trims its own draw when the house is busy, can do the job instead.
Single or three phase supply
Which supply you have changes which chargers make sense and what the installation needs. We check it at the assessment rather than guess from the street.
The cable run
The charger needs its own circuit from the board to wherever the car parks. The cable has to be sized for the distance it runs, and getting it there neatly through walls, roof space or along a garage takes time. Our Narellan Vale install took 4 hours 53 minutes on site, and most of that went into the cable run, not the charger.
A job that needed the board first: Hoxton Park, $8,963
On our Hoxton Park job the homeowner bought his charger before the car arrived, which gave us time to look properly. At the assessment we found half the circuits in the house had no residual current protection, on a board that was already carrying air conditioning, cooktops, a solar inverter and a battery.
So the board came first. We replaced the internals with individual safety switches and surge protection, then installed a myenergi Zappi with load management and CT clamps so it could work with the solar and battery. The job came to $8,963, done in one visit, four days from enquiry to charging. That is the top of the bigger band, and the switchboard was the larger part of it.
A job where the board had room: Narellan Vale
Our Narellan Vale job is the other end. The homeowner had already bought a 32 amp single phase charger, and the board had capacity for it without a supply upgrade. We quoted on site, the fixed price was accepted 22 minutes after we arrived, and it was installed two days later. Most of the time on site went into the cable run.
What the $275 assessment covers
We do not quote EV chargers over the phone, because what decides the price is in your switchboard and your supply. The assessment is a fixed $275, and if the install goes ahead with us the whole fee comes off the job. It covers:
- earth continuity testing
- a full switchboard and circuit protection inspection
- a maximum demand assessment of your supply
- charger location and cable route planning
- a written photographic report with a clear recommendation, the same day
Sometimes the answer is that the job is bigger than you hoped. Better to hear that before the charger goes on the wall than after.
Buying the charger yourself
Plenty of our customers turn up with a charger already in the box, and we are happy to install it. Two things are worth knowing before you buy. The charger you choose can change what the installation needs, because a unit with load management can sometimes avoid a supply upgrade that a simpler one would force. And the hardware is rarely the expensive part. Board capacity, your supply and the cable run move the price far more than the brand does.
If you have not bought yet, send us a photo of your switchboard with the door open and tell us where the car parks. We can usually tell you which band you are likely to land in before we visit.
Why our figures may look higher than others online
A lot of the EV charger cost figures online are estimates. Ours are what customers actually paid, including the jobs where the board needed work first. If you are comparing quotes, ask each one whether anyone has checked the switchboard, the protection on every circuit and the house’s maximum demand. If one has and the other has not, that usually explains the gap.
If your quote includes switchboard work, our switchboard upgrade cost guide shows what that part costs on its own. For the rest of how we do it, see our EV charger installation page or our case studies.
EV charger installation cost questions
How much does it cost to install an EV charger in Western Sydney?
On our recent jobs, $2,000 to $2,700 including GST when the customer supplied the charger and the board had capacity, and $2,500 to $4,200 when we supplied it. Jobs that needed switchboard or supply work first came to $6,100 to $9,000 all up.
Why do EV charger quotes vary so much?
Because the charger is usually the smallest part of the price. Whether the switchboard has capacity and protection, what the house already draws, single or three phase supply, and how far the cable runs decide most of the cost.
Will I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. The board at our Narellan Vale job had room. But three of our last five EV charger jobs did need the board upgraded first, which is why we assess before we quote.
Can you install a charger I have already bought?
Yes. Four of the jobs behind our figures were customer-supplied chargers, and they cost $2,000 to $2,700 including GST where the board had capacity.
Is the assessment fee extra?
It is a fixed $275, and the whole fee is credited against the installation if it goes ahead with us.
