Home EV charging, planned from the switchboard up

Everyone sees the charger on the wall. The part that matters is everything behind it — supply capacity, load management, cable route and protection. We plan that first, so your charger works properly for the life of the car.

01What we look at

Before we quote a single metre of cable

A good EV install is an assessment job first and an installation job second.

Your supply capacity

Single or three phase, main switch rating and existing load — this decides what charger suits.

Spare ways in the board

A dedicated circuit with its own protection. If the board is full, we'll tell you upfront.

Cable route & distance

Garage, carport or driveway — the run length affects cable size and therefore price.

Load management

Where supply is tight, a smart charger can throttle to keep the whole house within limits.

Your car and habits

7kW covers overnight charging for almost everyone. We won't sell you capacity you can't use.

Solar & tariffs

If you have solar or a time-of-use plan, we'll set the charger up to make the most of it.

02Our process

From assessment to first charge

Site assessment

We check your switchboard, supply and the intended charger location — often from photos to start.

Recommend & quote

A charger and installation plan matched to your car, your supply and your budget. Fixed price.

Install & protect

Dedicated circuit, correct RCD type for EV charging, tidy cable route and secure mounting.

Commission & show you

Charger commissioned, app set up, and a walkthrough of scheduling and charge limits before we leave.

03Our promise

The part nobody photographs

Most EV charger problems trace back to the switchboard, not the charger. Undersized cable, the wrong RCD type, or no headroom in the supply will cause nuisance tripping months later. We do that assessment before quoting, which occasionally means telling you the job is bigger than you hoped — but it means it works.

06FAQ

EV charging questions

How fast will my car charge at home?
A 7kW single-phase charger adds roughly 40km of range per hour — a full overnight charge for almost any EV. Three-phase 22kW is faster but only if your car and supply both support it.
Do I need to upgrade my switchboard?
Sometimes. If your board is full or has no RCD protection, it'll need work first. We assess this before quoting so the price you get is the real one.
Can I just use the cable that came with the car?
For occasional charging, yes — but a standard outlet charges slowly and isn't designed for hours of continuous load. A dedicated charger is safer and far faster.
Will it work with my solar?
Yes. Most smart chargers can be set to prioritise excess solar or charge during off-peak windows. We'll configure it with you at commissioning.
Which charger should I buy?
We'll recommend based on your car, supply and budget rather than pushing one brand. If you've already bought one, we're happy to install it.
How long does installation take?
Most single-charger installs are half a day. Longer cable runs or a switchboard upgrade will add time, which we'll flag in the quote.

Thinking about a home charger?

Send a photo of your switchboard and where you'd like the charger — we can usually give you a good indication before we visit.

Tell us about your setup — e.g. Tesla Model 3, single garage, board is on the other side of the house…
